The inspiration for the Avenue A Residence comes from the characteristics of the city it is located in. The design symbolically represents the growing millennial population in the area, with a contemporary language that sets it apart in the neighborhood. The minimalistic approach creates a unique identity and aesthetic quality in the city.
One of the key strengths of this design is its focus on maximizing natural light. The project takes advantage of the flood of bright sunlight, enhancing the natural feel of the space. The simple color scheme further enhances the overall ambiance. Additionally, the exposed structural elements reinforce the statement of simplicity in the design.
The Avenue A Residence features a split-level configuration, determined by the narrow site and existing grade. The design takes into consideration the site's constraints and transforms them into unique architectural elements. The main concrete wall serves not only as a structural element but also acts as a thermal wall, storing heat during the day and releasing it at night.
The project includes a 4,000 square foot main residence and a 500 square foot accessory dwelling unit (ADU). The ADU has a separate entrance, addressing the housing shortage in the city. The design also prioritizes capturing the existing views on the second floor, providing a connection to the surrounding environment.
The Avenue A Residence was completed in April 2017 in Redondo Beach, California. The design reflects the careful research and attention to detail that went into creating a modern living space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
